WHAT IS
MOCK TRIAL?

Mock Trial is an undergraduate collegiate competition that simulates courtroom trials. Teams from several universities compete using an official AMTA case. The Mock Trial Association at the University of Houston provides students of all backgrounds the necessary tools to develop critical thinking, analytical, and public speaking skills. It requires students to execute a courtroom strategy involving the presentation of evidence, examination of witnesses, and case arguments. Through hands-on trial experience, participants learn how to execute their case in a persuasive and professional manner.

ARE THERE ANY PREREQUISITES TO JOIN?

No prior public speaking skills or knowledge about litigation are needed to start. We begin with the basics: how to behave in a courtroom, how to make legal arguments in a trial, and how to persuade a jury. We'll teach you by applying these concepts in practice. By the end of the competition season, you should be able to stand confidently in the courtroom and adapt to whatever the opposing team and the judges throw at you. You DO NOT have to be pre-law to join.

WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN?

Mock trial is a must-have experience for those planning to attend law school. Everything we teach will be covered in evidence and trial advocacy courses. Even if you aren't going to be a lawyer, the problem-solving and public speaking skills will prove invaluable in whatever field you go into.
